How horse racing betting works in South Africa
South African bookmakers offer two ways to bet on a race. On the tote, all bets go into a pool and winners share it, so the dividend is known only after the race. With fixed odds, the price is locked when you place the bet.
Every bookmaker on this page holds a licence from a provincial gambling board. Betting with an unlicensed site is illegal in South Africa and leaves you with no protection.
Popular bet types
- Win: your horse finishes first.
- Place: your horse finishes in the paid places.
- Exacta and Trifecta: the first two or three home, in order.
- Place Accumulator (PA): a horse placed in each of several races.
- Pick 6 and Jackpot: the winners of a run of races, for a pooled prize.
The big South African races
- Durban July, Greyville: the first Saturday of July.
- Cape Town Met, Kenilworth: late January.
- Summer Cup, Turffontein: late in the year.
